From its inception, Actors’ Theatre has been committed to productions which address issues that reflect the dilemmas, conflicts and joys of human existence. Often the plays stimulate dialogue for some and discomfort for others. To that end, Actors’ has produced such plays as Seven Passages: The Stories of Gay Christians, Angels in America, Corpus Christi, Intimate Apparel, A Lesson Before Dying, Boy Gets Girl and The Waiting Room, dealing with issues important to the African-American, women’s and LGBT communities.

Many Actors’ Theatre productions have been West Michigan premieres such as Bat Boy the Musical and Side Show. Actors’ has been recognized for its work, including awards from the American Association of Community Theatres, Between the Lines newspaper, On The Town – Townie Awards and over 70 Grand Awards for excellence in Grand Rapids theatre.

Modern-day tragedy ‘Drawer Boy’ unfolds slowly at Actors’ Theatre

By Sue Merrell | The Grand Rapids Press

In Shakespeare’s “Hamlet,” the hero discovers his uncle has killed his father and married his mother. By the end of the play, the stage is littered with bodies.

In “The Drawer Boy,” a modern-day tragedy at Actors’ Theatre, a man loses his memory and his love and is lied to by the one person he trusts. But in the end, the only thing littering the stage is some very well-washed gravel.

Friendship makes all difference in these two tales

It’s a cultural clash when Actors’ Theatre presents “The Drawer Boy” this month

Actors’ Theatre’s production of The Drawer Boy features an urban and rural culture clash when a young actor decides to live with two elderly farmers to do research for a script.

The farmers, Morgan and Angus, are reluctant to let the self-absorbed city boy, Miles Potter, move in. But as Miles spends more and more time with the farmers, he uncovers secrets they have managed to keep hidden from each other for three decades.

“The first time I read the play, I was captured by the characters and the sweet simplicity of their lives that masks a deep and dramatic secret,” Director Fred Sebulske said. “These are three wonderful character studies, full of humor and mystery, drama and humanity.”
