West Michigan Jazz Society Names Edye Evans Hyde Musician of the Year

Local Spin of the Week: Edye Evans Hyde, West Michigan’s jazz musician of the year

I’m guessing there are plenty of things folks don’t know about Grand Rapids singer Edye Evans Hyde, who may be as well known in West Michigan’s music circles as anyone in the business – from singing with various jazz, pop and R&B bands to performing in theater productions.

For instance, the Creston High School graduate was named homecoming queen her senior year.

For another, she earned a much-deserved standing ovation at DeVos Performance Hall in 2001 when she opened for the legendary Ray Charles.

I was there that night, and it was impressive to see a local artist deliver such a triumphant performance in front of so many people, some of whom probably were unfamiliar with Hyde at the time.
