“Ampersand” on G-Sync at Rapid Growth Media

Tommy Allen of G-Sync at Rapid Growth Media has a few things to say (and not to say) about Ampersand opening this Thursday!

Ampersand: New Play (Just Don’t Call It A W#@*d P^#)%*e)

When Vincent Delaney has been asked in the past if he is a political playwright, he has in the most casual fashion been most direct like his writing to answer “yes,” quickly adding, “but only to the extent that the politics become personal. My other plays are drawn from family history (including my own), or from wonderfully bizarre tidbits in the news.”

His ability to be as fluid, as we are in life with the constant bombarding of news and stimuli that is shaping to be uniquely modern, is one reason why so many connect with his work.

Our Special Thanks

Actors’ Theatre would like to send a big thank you out to the following companies and organizations.  These folks have helped make Ampersand by Vincent Delaney an incredibly special production:

Rain City Projects.  Rain City supports, promotes and develops playwrights and their work in the Pacific Northwest.  Their support assisted with travel expenses for Seattle based playwright, Vincent Delaney, to make trips to Grand Rapids!

Peaches Bed and Breakfast.  Also assisting with Mr. Delaney’s stay, Peaches has provided lodging for his visit.  Having access to the playwright during the development of the work has been vital and mutually beneficial to Vince and to the cast and crew of the production.

Lost and Found.  An incredibly cool and eclectic home furniture and accessories store, Lost and Found has generously lent Actors’ some furniture for the set of Ampersand.

We generously thank these companies and organizations for their support!

Ampersand opens this Thursday, March 22nd.  Show time is 8PM and there are still tickets available at Join us on Friday March 23 for a post-performance discussion with playwright Vincent Delaney as he discusses his new play.

“Ampersand” In the Grand Rapids Press

Journalist Lorilee Craker takes a look at Actors’ Theatre’s fourth play of the season: Ampersand.  Here’s an excerpt from the article on

Actors Theatre works with playwright Vincent Delaney to stage ‘Ampersand’

GRAND RAPIDS — An ampersand, or, “&”, is a logogram representing the word “and.” It’s also the connective tissue and title of a new play by Seattle playwright Vincent Delaney, opening this week on the Actors Theatre stage.

The title “Ampersand” comes from Delaney’s meditations on marriage and relationships; it’s me and you. Who am I when I’m with you?” said Randy Wyatt, the play’s director and theater program director at Aquinas College. “It just won a national comedy award for a play, and we are so excited we had our hands on it long before anyone knew about it.”

Wyatt met Delaney four years ago, when Aquinas students staged one of his scripts as part of a program introducing new plays through The Playwright Center in Minneapolis. “The play had gone up at The Guthrie Theater (in Minnesota), and he flew out to see ours and ended up liking it better than the Guthrie’s,” Wyatt said.

The two kept in touch, and when Delaney sent him a copy of “Ampersand,” Wyatt, also the literary director for Actors, thought it would be perfect for the company and its patrons.

“I just thought it was phenomenal,” he said. “It had the classical structure of a farce like Moliere, but was set in contemporary times.”
