‘Grey Gardens’ musical based on bizarre documentary to finish Actors’ Theatre season
GRAND RAPIDS, MI – The 2013-14 Actors’ Theatre season ends with a production of “Grey Gardens” – a musical based on the bizarre documentary of the same name.
The 1975 documentary film has become a cult classic. It depicts the lives of two reclusive socialites – a mother and daughter both named Edith Bouvier Beale who were also the aunt and first cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. The women lived in a derelict mansion called “Grey Gardens” in East Hampton, NY. Both women faced eviction due to living conditions but were allowed to remain in the home because Kennedy Onassis provided the funding to repair the dilapidated house.
The musical follows the two women’s lives from their original status as socially polished aristocrats to their isolated existence in a home overrun by cats and focuses on their complicated and dysfunctional relationship. While the second act of the musical’s material of will be familiar to those who have seen the documentary, the first act may surprise some, according to Director Fred Sebulske.
