“It wasn’t me. It was the black hole.” With these words, a temp worker named Genny launches us on an epic, fantastical journey through corporate America, Appalachia, astrophysics and beyond. TEMPODYSSEY tells the story of a young woman who’s convinced she’s the goddess of death. Fleeing the imminent creation of a black hole on one side of the country, she lands smack in the middle of a bomb manufacturing company on the other. Her only hope lies in the unlikely guise of a nameless temp who considers himself immortal. Can he help Genny cast off her dark mythology once and for all? Or will she explode, taking all of downtown Seattle with her? Dan Dietz melds the absurdity of contemporary cubicle life with the epic poetics of Greek mythology, and the results are hilarious, horrifying and ultimately uplifting.

Over the course of a single month, these unlikely roommates infuriate, bewilder, and ultimately reach each other. 4000 MILES looks at how two outsiders find their way in today’s world.

Here the ancient game of chess becomes a metaphor for romantic rivalries, competitive gamesmanship, super power politics and international intrigues. The pawns in this drama form a love triangle: the loutish American chess star, the earnest Russian champion and a Hungarian American female assistant who arrives at the international chess match in Bangkok with the American but falls for the Russian. From Bangkok to Budapest the players, lovers, politicians, and spies manipulate and are manipulated to the pulse of a monumental rock score that includes “One Night in Bangkok” and “Heaven Help My Heart.

The Light In The Piazza – A Musical

Margaret Johnson, the wife of an American businessman, is touring the Italian countryside with her daughter, Clara, in the summer of 1953. While sightseeing, Clara – a beautiful, surprisingly childish young woman – loses her hat in a sudden gust. As if guided by an unseen hand, the hat lands at the feet of Fabrizio Naccarelli, a handsome Florentine, who returns it to Clara.  This brief episode, charged with coincidence and fate, sparks an immediate and intense romance between Clara and Fabrizio.  Extremely protective of her daughter, Margaret attempts to keep Clara and Fabrizio apart.  As The Light In The Piazzaunfolds, a secret is revealed: in addition to the cultural differences between the young lovers, Clara is not quite all that she appears. Unable to suppress the truth about her daughter, Margaret is forced to reconsider not only Clara’s future, but her own hopes as well.

 

 

Other Desert Cities – A Play

Brooke Wyeth returns home to Palm Springs after a six-year absence to celebrate Christmas with her parents, her brother, and her aunt. Brooke announces that she is about to publish a memoir dredging up a pivotal and tragic event in the family’s history-a wound they don’t want reopened. In effect, she draws a line in the sand and dares them all to cross it.

SouthSide Theater Company Presents: INTO THE WOODS

SouthSide Theater Company is proud to present Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s INTO THE WOODS.

“Into the Woods” is the story of a Baker and his Wife who learn they’ve been cursed with childlessness by the Witch next door, so they embark on a quest to break the spell by swindling, lying to and stealing from Cinderella, Little Red Ridinghood, Rapunzel, and Jack (of Beanstalk fame). Everyone’s wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later, with disastrous results. Thus, what begins a lively irreverent fantasy becomes a moving lesson about community, responsibility, and the stories we tell our children. Into the Woods won several Tony Awards, including Best Score, Best Book, and Best Actress in a Musical (Joanna Gleason). Director Andrew Williams will bring a new interpretation to the show, scaling it down to a 12 person cast in a re-imagined production forcing the audience to use their imagination and see things through the eyes of a child.
