An intriguing premise poignantly comes to life in a wonderful character study of a grandmother and grandson in the Actors Theatre production “4000 Miles,” which opened Thursday at Spectrum Theatre.
Questions of love and loss, aging and death and the complexities of family relationships are all explored in the one act play by Amy Herzog.
The play’s multiple angles are revealed through the prism of its two major characters – 91 year-old Vera Joseph (portrayed with a remarkable and engaging consistency by Marti Childs) and her 21 year-old grandson Leo (whose confident yet vulnerable Owen McIntee was also a highlight). […]

Marti Childs (Vera) has had sixty wonderful years of theatre in Grand Rapids, acting, directing, crewing, and teaching. Some favorites have been: Steel Magnolias and All The Way Home at Civic Theatre, Mornings At Sevenand Torch Song Trilogy at Circle Theatre, and The Road To Mecca and Tongue Of A Bird at Actors’ Theatre.
Sydney Doornbos (Bec) is thrilled to be making her debut performance at Actors’ Theatre. Previous performances include her work with the Grand Rapids Christian High Theater Company, shows such as The Miracle Worker,Crazy for You, and The 39 Steps. A proud cast member at Celebration! Cinema, she cannot thank that community enough for everything they’ve taught her.
Cathy Kim (Amanda) was born in Jacksonville, Florida but raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan for most of her life; spending some time in South Korea when she was very young. Coming from a very musical mother, Cathy has participated in a few productions in her high school such as: The Wiz, Sweeney Todd, and To Kill a Mockingbird. Cathy has also participated in Grand Rapids Got Talent and was showcased in the Top 12 Finale of the competition in August of 2012. Cathy takes vocal lessons from Coach Kathy Gibson, and participates in singing with The Piano Cottage and touring with the group to local venues in Grand Rapids. She is a second-year Social Work major at Cornerstone University and is committed to pole vaulting for Cornerstone University’s Women’s Track and Field team. In her free time, she loves to spend time with her loved ones and also has a passion for playing the guitar and singing.
Owen McIntee (Leo) is excited to return to Actors’ stage, having previously appeared in Love! Valour! Compassion! (Bobby) and tempOdyssey (Dead Body Boy). A graduate of Aquinas College with a BA in Theatre Performance, he has appeared in numerous shows around Grand Rapids. Some of his favorite roles include Angels in America: Millennium Approaches(Prior Walter) with Southside Theatre Co., My Name is Asher Lev (Asher Lev) with Jewish Theatre, These Shining Lives (Tom) with Aquinas, and Alice in Wonderland (Dormouse) with Circle Theatre, as well as being able to participate in Chicago’s 2nd Annual Citizens’ Play Festival with the Fine Print Theatre Co. last summer.
